Betamek to invest RM3 mil in software and system development

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 24): Electronics manufacturing services (EMS) provider Betamek Bhd is investing in software and system development and implementation to facilitate factory automation towards industry 4.0 (“IR 4.0”).

In a statement on Thursday (Aug 24), Betamek managing director Mirzan Mahathir said to further automate the core business process and systems, the company is in the process of adopting customised software and system to complement its business operations, which will allow them to better monitor and control the complex processes executed during the production processes. “These software and systems will create a network to link our manufacturing facility, including the smart warehousing system and material handling system, which includes a computerised manufacturing execution system to better manage the movement of the input materials, work-in-progress materials and finished goods on the production floor,” he said.

Currently, the company’s printed circuit board assembly operations are automated and operated with the surface-mount technology method, which is in line with auto optical inspection machines that incorporate a three-dimension inspection system.

Mirzan said the company intends to further automate some of the repetitive and laborious tasks in its manufacturing process to improve speed, productivity and quality, and to reduce human errors or wastage.

“We have identified the adoption of robotic soldering machines, which will be integrated with our sub-assembly lines.

“Currently, our soldering process is facilitated by wave soldering and manual soldering.

“The robotic soldering machine is expected to help reduce labour costs, ensure consistency in soldering quality and achieve higher production rates.

“This robotic soldering machine will not replace our manual or wave soldering in entirety. However, it is expected to complement our manual soldering process,” he said.

Mirzan said Betamek has allocated RM3 million to purchase additional machinery and equipment such as x-ray inspection machines, ball grid array rework stations, printed circuit boards router, and robotic soldering machines in order to improve the quality, efficiency and productivity.

Currently, the company’s soldering process is facilitated by wave soldering and manual soldering.

The robotic soldering machine is expected to help reduce labour costs, ensure consistency in soldering quality and achieve higher production rates.

At the time of writing on Thursday (Aug 24), Betamek dipped 1.08% or 0.5 sen to 46 sen, with 721,100 shares traded.
